Nags Head Personality and Health Conference 1988

With some encouragement from a devious colleague, I crashed the Personality and Health conference Bibb Latane sponsored in the summer of '88 at his refurbished beachside motel in Nags Head. Once my check cleared the bank I was welcomed. Rick Snyder was the MC and everyone had to present and be critiqued.  As a first-year Assistant Professor my presentation was horrendous.  But I heard solid presentations from up-and-coming and established colleagues (.e.g. Suls, Melamed, Wills, Forsyth, Croyle, Heesacker) and Rick presented his preliminary, unpublished hope model.  Several of these colleagues were active in the social-clinical interface and later were among the first contributors to the positive psychology literature. Rick gave me permission to use his instrument.  The conference was among the most intellectually invigorating experiences of my academic career.
